I haven't always been health food conscious! As a child I was addicted to sweets, especially candy. I could eat as much as I wanted and it ever seemed to catch up to me. As I got a little older, working part time and going to college left little room for eating a well balanced diet. I would eat anything that was quick and easy, nap in between classes, and wonder why I was always feeling sluggish and tired. I wasn't the greatest cook either! I think my mom cringed every time I was in the kitchen as I always seemed to burn something. (Sorry mom!)
After graduating college and beginning my full time career as a caseworker for children in foster care, I started paying a little more attention to the foods I ate and how they made me feel. I was becoming more self conscious about my body and always felt "off". That is when I discovered a love for cooking and eating healthy. Nowadays, I make dinner every single night and pack leftovers for lunch. It's therapeutic to me after a stressful and long day at work! (I am also no longer putting plastic bowls on a hot burner or asking my mom which part of the oven you "bake" in.) I am so intrigued by the power of food and how we can heal ourselves by making better choices in the foods we eat!
While applying to grad schools for Social Work, Occupational Therapy, and Special Education, I stumbled upon the website for The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). I had no idea what I wanted to do but I knew it was not any of the above mentioned fields. They seemed to be the most obvious routes but something in my gut told me it wasn't truly what I wanted to do. On a whim, I called IIN and spoke to an advisor. I signed up the next day and I've loved every minute of my training and know that it's exactly what I want to do!
Another love of mine is fashion, new and vintage. I .opened an Etsy store last year and sold some of my finds. It did pretty well and I loved the hunt for vintage treasures, putting together lookbooks and photoshoots. My dream was to open my own store one day. That dream took a backseat as I began school and health counseling but I don't think the two have to be seperate. I'm a firm believer of doing what you love and loving what you do. Inside Out started as just a health counseling practice but I'm working on integrating my love of fashion into it. I'm tossing around the idea of adding image consulting and woredrobe makeovers to my programs. I love letting friends come over and rummage through my closet. Beauty comes from within but it doesn't hurt to look and feel good on the outside too!
